Call for Grand Challenge Proposals

The 2025 edition of IEEE Visual Communications and Image Processing (VCIP) Conference will be held in Klagenfurt, Austria, during December 1-4, 2025.

The Organizing Committee of VCIP 2025 invites Grand Challenge (GC) Proposals on emerging topics in visual communications and image processing.

GC Guidelines

Please see the following guidelines for this year’s GC submissions:

  1. GC organizers cannot participate as competitors in the GC they are organizing.
  2. GC organizers should provide a dataset that is open for competition; in particular, it has to include a training set (if needed) and a test set (and ground truth, if relevant) which are made available or not to the GC participants depending on the GC specifics.
  3. GC organizers are responsible for evaluating all submitted GC contribution packages; a GC contribution package corresponds to a GC solution and should include a document describing the solution as detailed as possible in no more than 5 pages using the VCIP format, results, software, etc.
  4. GC organizers should organize a GC session to be included in the VCIP2025 program, which should include presentations of a set of solutions selected by GC organizers, ideally followed by a panel or open discussion. GC winners should be announced during the GC sessions.
  5. Participants in GC are encouraged to submit regular VCIP papers (up to 4 pages of content + 1 page reference) corresponding to the GC solutions that, in case of acceptance, will be published in the conference proceedings. The rejection of the submitted VCIP GC paper does not necessarily exclude the corresponding solution from assessment since the criteria involved are different, e.g. novelty is critical for the paper while performance may be more critical for the solution.

Requirements

Prospective organizers should submit a five-page maximum GC proposal description document containing the following information:

  • GC title
  • Organizers’ contacts and short bios
  • GC brief introduction
  • GC significance and relevance to visual communication and image processing
  • Specification of which files are included in the contribution packages
  • Evaluation criteria of GC solutions
  • Proposed guidelines and timelines for releasing datasets, receiving and evaluating GC solutions
  • Plan for soliciting participation
  • Additional information (e.g., sponsors and awards, if any)

Proposals will be evaluated based on originality, ambition, feasibility, and implementation plan.

Submission

Please submit the proposals in PDF format via email to the Grand Challenge Chairs: Chris Wei Zhou (zhouw26@cardiff.ac.uk) and Ying Liu (yliu15@scu.edu).
